What is Fetal Diagnosis Clinic?

The purpose of our Fetal Diagnosis Clinic is to help you go through your pregnancy with peace of mind.
Through prenatal testing, we can learn about your unborn baby’s condition and check for the presence of any serious diseases or disorders.
If an issue is found, the true goal of this diagnosis is to allow you and your partner to work closely with the doctor to discuss and consider the following:

1. Is the baby growing properly in the womb?
2. What is the best and safest method for delivery?
3. How will the child develop after birth, and what is the best way to care for them?

Please note that these tests cannot detect every possible issue. However, they are able to identify congenital disorders with a high degree of accuracy.

Consulting Couples

  • ● Couples concerned about their baby’s health or potential illnesses
  • ● Couples of advanced maternal or paternal age
  • ● Couples who previously had a child with a chromosomal issue, or were informed there was a risk (trisomy 21 [Down syndrome], trisomy 18, trisomy 13)
  • ● Couples in which either partner has a structural chromosomal abnormality

Tests

Detailed Fetal Ultrasound

Test Timing

  • ● Early Scan/Detailed Fetal Ultrasound・・・11 weeks of pregnancy
  • ● First-Trimester Detailed Fetal Ultrasound・・・12 to 14 weeks of pregnancy
  • ● Second-trimester Detailed Fetal Ultrasound・・・18 to 20 weeks of pregnancy
  • ● Third-trimester Detailed Fetal Ultrasound・・・28 to 30 weeks of pregnancy

Using ultrasound equipment that is more precise than that used in a standard prenatal checkup, we can examine the baby in the womb in detail, including any abnormalities and blood flow. Some physical abnormalities caused by chromosomal disorders may also be detected.

NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing)

Test Timing

  • ● 10 to 16 weeks of pregnancy

NIPT is a screening test that analyzes the baby’s DNA found in the mother’s blood. It can assess the likelihood of trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18, and trisomy 13, providing results as positive, negative, or inconclusive.

Quatro Test

Test Timing

  • ● 15 to 17 weeks of pregnancy

The Quatro Test is a screening that examines four substances in the mother’s blood, which come from the baby and the placenta (AFP, uE3, hCG, and inhibin A). It can assess the likelihood of trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18, and open neural tube defects (such as anencephaly or spina bifida).
The risk of having a baby with Down syndrome or trisomy 18 increases with maternal age.

What Quatro Test Results Show

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)

Test Timing

  • ● 10 to 15 weeks of pregnancy (recommended after 11 weeks)

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is a test in which a small sample of the placenta, present in early pregnancy, is collected to check whether the baby has any chromosomal abnormalities.
It can detect conditions such as trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18, and trisomy 13.
The test can be performed using standard chromosomal analysis (G-banding) and microdeletion testing (such as microarray).

Amniocentesis

Test Timing

  • ● 16 to 32 weeks of pregnancy (recommended after 17 weeks)

Amniocentesis is a test performed from the second trimester onward in which a sample of amniotic fluid is collected to check whether the baby has any chromosomal abnormalities.
It can detect conditions such as trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18, and trisomy 13.
The test can be performed using standard chromosomal analysis (G-banding) and microdeletion testing (such as microarray).

Flow of Fetal Diagnosis

胎児診断の流れ
  • ● For patients who have undergone pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT-A, PGT-M, or PGT-SR), chorionic villus sampling examines the same tissue (the tissue that develops into the placenta). Therefore, amniocentesis is recommended as the definitive diagnostic test.
  • ● If abnormalities are detected during a detailed fetal ultrasound or non-diagnostic tests, we recommend undergoing diagnostic tests for a definitive diagnosis.
  • ● If you are considering diagnostic tests after undergoing non-diagnostic tests, please be mindful of the testing timeframe and the time required to receive results. Depending on the timing, it may no longer be possible to undergo diagnostic tests while waiting for the screening results.
  • ● Non-diagnostic Tests are used for risk assessment and as screening tests.
  • ● Diagnostic Tests are used to provide a definitive diagnosis.
